Male Hair Loss

Have you started losing hair and are worried about it ?

Male Hair LossFor many men, losing hair is something they will have to face as part of the ageing process. There is good news for the men suffering with hair loss, as male pattern baldness can now be treated with preventative hair loss treatments and products.

How does hair loss start?

Hair may start to disappear from the temples and the crown of the head at any time. For a few men this process starts as early as the later teenage years, but for most it happens in their late 20s and early 30s. A little thinning of the hair may be noticeable at first, followed by wider hair loss allowing more of the scalp to become visible.

Causes of Male Hair Loss

Male hair loss, otherwise known as Androgenetic Alopecia or male pattern baldness, is caused by the effect of the male hormones, called androgens, on genetically predisposed hair follicles (passed down the family tree).

Male Pattern BaldnessIn male pattern baldness, which tends to be inherited, the hair is usually lost at the temples and the crown. This happens because of an excess of a chemical called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, which causes the hair follicles to make thinner and thinner hair until they eventually disappear.

Other causes of hair loss include:

  • iron-deficiency anaemia
  • under active thyroid
  • fungal scalp infection
  • some prescribed medicines
  • stress

Two-thirds (about 7.4 million men)of all men are affected by male pattern baldness – in the UK.

If you have started losing hair, it does not mean you will have to live with it because with the right information in hand, many successful hair loss treatments are now available making it possible to slow down the amount and rate of hair loss, stop hair loss or even re grow hair.
